Jo Byrns High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) Senior, Maxine Knoepfel, welcomes Arthur– her Labrador Retriever puppy in training from Southeastern Guide Dogs– to Robertson County! Southeastern Guide Dogs– to Robertson County!

Southeastern Guide Dogs transforms lives by creating and nurturing extraordinary partnerships between people and dogs. Employing the latest in canine development and behavior research. The national organization trains guide dogs, service dogs and companion dogs for people living with significant challenges including those with visual impairments and veterans with disabilities.

When brainstorming ideas for her FFA Supervised Agricultural Experience, Maxine discovered the group Southeastern Guide Dogs (SEGD). After volunteering with the SEGD chapter in Nashville, she proposed the idea of training a guide dog to the Agricultural Department and Robertson County Board of Education.

Jo Byrns High School has high hopes for Arthur to improve the hands on experience of the spring 2018 Small Animal Science class. In doing so, she hopes

to educate classmates about the roles of a service dog while working towards the final goal of preparing Arthur for his future as a guide dog.

All of Southeastern Guide Dogs’ services – which include selective breeding and expert dog training; comprehensive on-campus student instruction; and lifetime graduate follow-up – are provided at no cost to the recipients. The charity relies 100% on private donations and receives no government funding. Southeastern Guide Dogs has the distinction of being dually accredited by the two premier, global accreditation bodies: the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International.
